National Building Regulations and the Building Code SANS 10400
South Africa's current National Building Code (SABS 0400) is being reviewed and the new Building Code (SANS 10400) is awaiting publication.

This document is published in terms of the National Building Regulations and Building Standards Act, 1977 (Act No. 103 of 1977).

SABS 0400/SANS 10400 is made up of various parts of which Part A is the regulatory or legally enforceable portion. Parts B to W are deemed to satisfy sectionsrules which if adhered to will ensure compliance to part A. Each part covers different aspects of the construction and finishing of buildings. These guide-lines are minimum standards that ensure the health and occupational safety of the occupants in these buildings.

SANS 204 was published as a National Standard for “ Energy Efficiency in Buildings “ in October 2008, and legislative procedures are in progress to incorporate this standard in the National Building Regulations, whereupon it will be compulsory for all new buildings to comply with these minimum standards.

The following summary focuses on areas that are impacted by insulation and does not deal with areas such as shading, windows, lightning etc which are also covered in SANS 204.

Energy Efficiency in Buildings SANS 204

The energy efficiency standard for buildings has been developed and published to ensure that we plan to achieve a huge reduction in energy consumption using practical energy saving measures when new buildings are being designed and build.
